Organic By Nature shop offers unique fair trade toys for your baby, toddler or older child. In 1958, Barbara Sansoni, a colourist and artist, created the BAREFOOT concept out of a need for a rehabilitation program for young Sri Lankan women, who had little schooling and no skills. Today, BAREFOOT is a premier textile design company exporting worldwide. High quality workmanship and handwork are not cheap substitutes for machinery, which is why BAREFOOT products are relatively expensive and will last a lifetime. Each worker earns a real living wage, so they can support themselves and their families.
Nothing is mass produced! Each toy is fully handcrafted by one person from start to finish under fair trade regulations. These toys are made with handwoven cotton fabric and filled with natural kapok fiber. Only premium Swiss colourfast and non-toxic dyes are used for these brilliant colours. Delightfully bright and cuddly they are safe for babies and small children.

Just like lots of other people I used not to bother with the whole organic clothes thing. To be completely honest I did not even know there WAS such a thing as organic fabric. Food – yes, but clothes? Most of us think that cotton by definition means healthy, natural, wholesome. What I did not know is that there is a lot more to the picture then this. So for all of you who still wonder what on earth is organic cotton and why is it so much better for us and our planet, here is the scoop.
Over the last century humans have developed a very long list of chemicals to help us combat the pests that can destroy the crops. These chemicals are so strong that not only they kill the pests, but they can also kill animals and seriously harm people too. Moreover, it pollutes our air, water and soil. Conventional cotton growing also makes thousands of acres too barren or contaminated for further farming. Now imagine this: one third of all chemicals in the world used in modern agriculture is applied to cotton plant. That’s a whole lot of chemicals that go and stay (!) in the clothes we wear, air we breath, water we drink.
Organic cotton growers, on the other hand, use natural pest control (simply said, good bugs eating bad bugs). They depend on healthy, living soil to produce strong plants resistant to pests and disease. Only natural methods such as manure and composting used to maintain seeds and soil fertility. To prevent weeds, trap water or lure pests and bring beneficial insects to the fields – special plants are seeded between rows. Organic cotton farming requeres less water for irrigation. Lots of weeding is done by hand. But it does not stop here. The fabric manufacturing itself has to be eco friendly too. Organic cotton is naturally more breathable, softer and thicker than conventional cotton and stays like that even after many washes. Only the lowest impact chemical dyes or vegetable dyes are used for organic fabric dye process. As a result of all this hard work, we can enjoy super soft yet durable cotton that does not harm us or our planet!
So be good to yourself and the Earth, consider organically grown cotton for your clothes.
Interesting facts:
It takes about 1/3 of a pound of pesticides and herbicides to grow enough conventional cotton for just one T-shirt! Many of which are known human cancirogens – acephate, dichloropropene, diuron, fluometuron, pendimethalin, tribufos, and trifluralin. By choosing organically grown cotton we protect ourselves, our planet and our children’s future from all these chemicals.

Each day when you are using your regular skin care products, you may be applying toxins to your skin without even realizing it. There are hundreds of toxic chemicals used in cosmetic products these days, some of which potentially contribute to rashes, allergies, headaches, asthma, hormonal imbalances, cancer and reproductive complications, not to mention the environmental impact.
Here are some cool little tricks I have learned over the years that will do just as good job as any leading commercial product on your complexion, hair and body but without adding the toxic cocktail or compromising your style or budget. Enjoy!
In the morning, slap a spoonful of plain organic yogurt on your face. Higher fat % for dry or normal skin and fat-free for oily. Excellent moisturizer and you can have the rest for breakfast;0)
Instead of your usual hairspray or gel try to apply plain aloe vera gel to style your hair. Add a little melted sugar for extra hold. Works just great!
Ummm…strawberries! Mash one or two extra-ripe berries in a cup, dip a cotton ball in the juice and wipe your face and neck area. Leave for 5-10 minutes, wash off with cold water. Your face will instantly look fresh and glowing, like after 8 hrs good night sleep. This one is my personal favorite, – being a mom to a teething toddler, 8 hours of sleep is unimaginable luxury I can only dream of, so this trick really does the job of looking good in the morning!
Good old cucumber will take the puffiness out of your eyes in no time. Cover your eyes with fresh, cold (must be cold!), thin slices and leave them on for a couple of minutes. Re-apply a fresh batch if needed. Camomile tea bags and ice cubes will do the trick too!
Lemon juice will get the skin discoloration caused by sun damage out, but you have to be persistant! Keep your skin well moisturized to avoid dry patches and remember to use good sunblock in between the applications (actually, you should use one All the time!).
“For extra fun, let your boyfriend or spouse kiss your lemon-juiced face – the look on his face will be priceless!”
Useful tips:
Use as much organic products as possible – you don’t want to add pesticides to your skin, right?
